Telling Tales In Music With Leddra Chapman
27/04/2010 14:15:29
Leddra Chapman is the talented singer/songwriter who first appeared on the Cordless Show back in April 2009. Having wrote her first song at the tender age of 12 her acoustic style and honest lyrics have been compared to Alanis Morissette and the legendary Joni Mitchell. With her album currently on general release, her debut single Story being featured on the BBC Radio 2 B-List and a television appearance just around the corner, she spent some time with Karla Williams to talk about the journey so far.
So what have you been doing since the Cordless Show?
Since I was on the Cordless Show I have recorded my album with Peter Vettese, which was one of the best things I ever done – it was so much fun; the best couple months of my life! Then I put together a band who play with me live and we’ve just been promoting the album and preparing it for its launch. Also my track Story has been on the Radio 2 B-list for the past month which we’re so ecstatic about.
And how has being on the Cordless Show helped your career?
Being on the Cordless Show was so much fun; I really enjoyed that day, it was fantastic. It was the first time I’ve had any real interviews and performances that have been filmed. It really, really helped as it allowed people to watch me live who couldn’t come and see me; I really think it helped promote my music.
You are currently and an ambassador for Quiksilver Women’s Range; what does that mean exactly?
Basically with their new women’s range instead of them promoting it using surfers, as they do with their men’s range, they decided to support creative, independent women. So they got some singer/songwriters, creative writers and even a chef and they believe in helping them along the way. We help them back by representing their brand and wearing their clothes.
How did they find you?
They found me on Myspace...then they emailed me and said I really like your music and we’re interested in having you as an ambassador - why don’t you come in and meet us in London? So we went in for a meeting and we just really got on; we clicked, and I just really loved the clothes!
If you could perform with any artist, living or dead, who would it be?
Joni Mitchell. I think she’s one of the best song writers of all time and I love her.
Who’s your favourite superhero?
Who’s my favourite superhero? [Pause] Superman; probably because I used to love Superman when I was little. I used to watch it all the time with my family when it was on every Saturday.
What is your favourite or most used website?
Facebook...or I dunno, it’s between Facebook and Twitter; it keeps changing. [Laughs] I can’t choose one; it’s between Facebook and Twitter...but probably more facebook!
What or where is perfection?
Hossegor in the South of France where I go with Quiksilver is really amazing. It’s such an amazing little town and it’s where I shot the video for Story. They’ve got some amazing beaches and the people there are just fantastic.
And what has life taught you?
What has life taught me? Wow that’s a big question! [Laughs] I think one of the main things I’ve learnt in the last couple of years is that if you get your head down and you want something really badly and you really believe in yourself then you can achieve anything.
Finally, what can we expect from you in 2010?
Well I’ve got my first television performance on the 12th January on ITV’s This Morning; that’s going to be really exciting. I’ve also got a second single coming out in February with a new music video to accompany it and I’ll be touring again in February, hopefully. I’ve had such a good 2009 so anything that happens in 2010 will just be a bonus really.
