Walking Tall With XO Man
27/04/2010 14:19:33
Standing at an impressive 6ft 10 and hailing from Mitcham, South London, XO Man first appeared on the Cordless Show back in May 2009. With a style comparable to Andre 3000 and an eclectic cross-genre approach to music, he was an instant success and has received the highest amount of hits (over six thousand) on the Cordless site. Since his appearance on the show his debut single Microwave has been played on BBC Radio 1 and he currently holds the record for most viewed music video in a day on YouTube's UK site. The charismatic and likeable giant recently sat down with Karla Williams to talk Bill Withers, YouPorn and his plans for 2010.
So what have you been doing since the Cordless Show? Erm...nothing actually; I've been sitting in my house. Nah joke! I've done a lot. I did a festival called The Big Chill, I held my own event called Nothing To Launch party, I've been doing gigs with a guy called Arthur Baker, I've been working on my EP and I've also done an advert for Nokia. Other than that - gym!
And how has being on the Cordless Show helped your career? Getting visual representation always does. It could have got just one hit for all I know but it still helps your career because it's one more person who's seen it; I'm sure it has benefitted highly. They shot it well and it was clean footage, it was edited well and presented to people well so I'm sure it's helped.
Your song Lady Dog, is that based on anyone in particular? Oh yeah it's a true story, I'll be honest with you. It is based loosely on a person but they'll never know.
And you won't ever tell them? No way! C'mon man you need to have a heart; you can't tell someone that!
If you could perform with any artist, living or passed, who would it be? Erm, let me think...Just one?
I'll give you three, max! Okay, Bill Withers....Beyonce - 100% and Damien Marley.
What or where is perfection? A bus I'm waiting on.
Your mean when it eventually comes? Yeah!
Who is your favourite fictional hero? Erm...Colombo! [Laughs]
And what website do you use the most? Facebook...or YouPorn [Laughs]
What has life taught you? Treat everybody like the Secret Millionaire.
How did you come up with that? So far, everything I've done musically has been by myself and what I've really done it taken on board the saying, 'it's nice to be nice'. If you're nice to nice people then they can get you more gigs and it's just a bigger progression and people help you along the way.
Finally, what can we expect from you in 2010? I've got a lot planned so just more - ten times what anyone else is doing!
